Downshifters are people who consciously choose a job that pays less than they could get in another job with a higher pay. They do this in order to improve the quality of their lives, reduce stress and increase free time.

Downshifting is the process of moving from a high-demand, high-paying job to a job that may not require as high of a skill or pay as much. This may include working part-time, reducing workload, changing career direction, starting your own business, or even moving to another location.

The reasons people choose to downshift can range from wanting more time for family and hobbies to reducing stress levels and health burdens.

Advantages and disadvantages of downshifting

Benefits of downshifting:

  1. Improved quality of life: One of the main benefits of downshifting is the ability to improve the quality of life. More free time, less stress, and a healthier work-life balance can lead to a happier and more fulfilled life.
  2. Reduced health burden: An associated benefit is reduced health burden. Reducing stress levels and a more relaxed work schedule can reduce the risk of developing a number of diseases.
  3. New Opportunities: Downshifting can open up new career and life opportunities. A new career path or starting your own business can lead to new experiences and opportunities for growth and development.

Downshifting Disadvantages:

  1. Decrease in income: The obvious disadvantage of downshifting is the decrease in income. This can lead to a shortage of money to pay bills, buy goods and services, and to achieve some goals.
  2. Decreased Skill Level: Moving to a less demanding job may result in a reduced skill level. If in the future you need to return to more complex and paid work, then this can become a problem.
  3. Social Disadvantages: Choosing to downshift may result in some social disadvantages. Some people may not understand why you are doing this and criticize your choice.
